Celebrating Earth Day 2013 in the City

Girl Scout Troop 1051 and Anewalt’s Landscape Contracting joined forces to spice up the City of Reading for an Earth Day project.  This year, the gals headed to Saint Margaret’s Catholic School at 233 Spring Street.  The project included a softscape installation at the main entrance of the school visible from Spring Street.

The girl scouts jumped right in, getting dirty, spreading mulch, planting liriope and watering the plants.  They learned the difference between variegated and non-variegated leaves and how important it is to properly space the plants on a landscape job.

In her own words, Junior Kaitlyn LaManna reports, “We planted flowers at St. Margaret’s to give back to our community.  Everyone can see it and might get inspired to do the same.”  Junior Margaret McCann continues, “I learned that when people make an effort, the results really turn out well.  The Earth is our home and we all need to work together to keep it clean.”
